4 Tips for Seniors in Need of Financial Assistance

Learn about programs that help seniors cover basic needs.

Transcript

There are thousands of government and private assistance programs to help seniors cover basic needs. Here are some examples:

  • The non-profit National Council on Aging helps seniors and their caregivers find financial assistance for healthcare, housing, food, utilities, in-home services and more.
  • Several government-sponsored programs help pay for medical coverage, including Medicaid and Medicare.
  • Most drug companies provide uninsured and low-income people access to prescription drugs they couldn't afford otherwise.
  • The IRS tax code includes several credits and deductions that target seniors, as well as free tax-preparation assistance.

Bottom line: If you're struggling to make ends meet, take the help that is offered.
