Before Saying "I Do," Take These Financial Vows

Wedding season is almost here. If you’re planning to walk down that aisle, here are a few financial items every couple should discuss before the big day.

Transcript

With wedding season around the corner, brides- and grooms-to-be are finalizing their wedding plans. If you’re planning a walk down the aisle, here are a few key financial issues to talk over:

• Outstanding debts. Tally up student loans, credit card balances, car payments, mortgages and other bills.

• Because lenders often base decisions on whichever spouse has the lower credit score, it’s better to know each other’s scores now.

• Align your goals. Make sure you’re on the same page about home ownership, continuing education, starting a family and when you want to retire.

Bottom line: Open and honest discussions about money now can ensure your marriage gets off on the right financial foot.
