Did you know that government agencies are sitting on billions of dollars in people's unclaimed assets? Things like IRS refunds, unclaimed pensions and abandoned bank accounts are stored away, collecting dust and accruing interest. When organizations holding abandoned funds can't find the rightful owners, they're required to turn the money over to state governments, which hold it in escrow until it's claimed. This happens for many reasons: Some people don't leave accurate forwarding addresses; others die without a will, leaving it up to the court to assign assets; still others forget about utility deposits, old stock certificates or product rebates.
